According to Wikipedia: Sexual objectification refers to the practice of regarding or treating another person merely as an instrument (object) towards one's sexual pleasure, and a sex object is a person who is regarded simply as an object of sexual gratification or who is sexually attractive. Objectification is an attitude that regards a person as a commodity or as an object for use, with insufficient regard for a person's personality or sentience.

After researching the phenomenon of marketing, I have found that most advertisements that depict people as objects involve women. This 100 billion dollar industry effects our society daily. Whether noticing billboards on the highway, reading a magazine or watching commercials on television, we are surrounded by marketing all the time! I believe society has formed a standard of beauty, distorting individual beauty. Many women are depicted in a sexual way to sell a product. Is this right? Should young girls get the message that the fewer clothes they wear the more attractive they will be? I think society needs to develop more organizations that encourage girls to find beauty in themselves. Girls need the confident to be successful in life. No one can reach happiness until they are confident in the body they walk around in everyday. Our generation must bring an end to the media's emphasize on standardized beauty. We all must find beauty in ourselves and cherish it!

How We Can Bring An End To This:

The Teen Identity Network is an movement encouraging girls to unleash their true beauty. Their goal is to "encourage professional photographers and filmmakers to help change the way females are portrayed in the media. We want to educate professionals and get them to think twice about the kind of photos or video they take of teen girls. We all are so bombarded by sexualized and objectified images of women every day, that it is easy for any of us to not even realize we could be contributing to the problem, instead of fixing it."
